SEPTEMBER VOLUME: FREIGHT CONTINUES TO GROW IN

INVESTOR NEWS No. 27 – 12 October 2022

Ferry – Cargo: The total volume in September 2022 was 7.5% lower than in 2021 due to lower volumes on the Dover Strait and in the Baltic Sea. In all other regions, the volume of cargo was higher than in 2021.

Volumes in the North Sea exceeded 2021 despite the negative impact of a strike at the Port of Felixstowe, as much of the volume was diverted to the Port of Immingham instead. Volumes in the Mediterranean network continued to grow, driven by Turkish industrial production and exports.

Channel’s volumes were below 2021 after activity in the Strait of Dover fell due to a decline in overall market volume and capacity additions from a third ferry operator. Channel year-to-date volumes were up 0.3% above 2021. Baltic Sea volumes were below 2021 due to the war in Ukraine, albeit to a lesser extent than previous months.

In the last 12 months of 2022-21, the total freight lane meters transported decreased by 1.5% to 43.1 million from 43.8 million in 2021-20.

ferry – passenger: Passenger numbers more than tripled to 371,000 in September 2019, the last comparative month before Covid-19, accounting for 82% of the volume. The number of cars was 89% of the volume in 2019. Channel’s volume was reduced by capacity expansion by a third ferry operator.

In the last twelve months of 2022-21, the total number of passengers was 3.3 million, compared to 0.8 million in 2021-20 and 5.1 million in 2019.
