“Offshore wind will drive Poland’s carbon-free energy economy. I am delighted that companies with state treasury participation can cooperate on such an important project as the construction of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea. The success of the energy transition without these measures could be called into question. I am counting on the greatest possible participation of Polish companies in this undertaking which is so important from the point of view of the Polish economy. “ said Poland’s deputy prime minister Jacek Sasin, Minister of State Property.

In January the three energy companies signed a letter of intent to collaborate on future offshore wind farm projects.

“The letter signed with Tauron and Enea in January 2021 was intended to strengthen cooperation between energy companies in the field of offshore wind energy.” called Wojciech DÄ…browski, CEO of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna.

“Today this intention is becoming a reality – together we will apply for the relevant permits and, in further steps, develop four projects in the Baltic Sea – three together with Enea and one in cooperation with Tauron. The acquisition of new locations in the Baltic Sea and the joint expansion of offshore wind energy will accelerate the pace of the Polish energy transition. “

The motivation for joint action is to achieve synergy effects in joint investments in the field of offshore wind energy. Joint actions by the companies are justified, among other things, by the fierce competition from the growing number of companies willing to obtain site permits and develop wind energy projects in Poland’s Baltic Exclusive Economic Zone, PGE said.

According to the PGE, the approval of the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection is the only condition precedent for both preliminary contracts. The application to the President of the OCCP for the merger of PGE with Enea was made on July 5, 2021. The application to the President of the OCCP for the merger of PGE with Tauron Polska Energia was submitted by the Office on October 28, 2021.

“The expansion of offshore wind energy is the key to achieving our goals of changing TAURON’s generation mix. We are aware that without wind farms in the Baltic Sea it will be practically impossible to replace coal sources. “ called Artur MichaÅ‚owski, acting CEO of Tauron Polska Energia.

“Due to its excellent conditions for the expansion of wind energy, the Baltic Sea has become a place of competition for the largest energy companies in the world. The joint action of Polish corporations improves our starting position in this fight and lets us look to the outcome with optimism. “

PGE is currently developing projects with a total capacity of around 3.5 GW, while the PGE strategy published in autumn 2020 has defined the long-term vision of the PGE Group’s development in the offshore energy sector to at least 6.5 GW by 2040.

Achieving this goal will depend on the availability of additional siting areas and the acquisition of the appropriate site permits, hence the importance of the signed agreement and the cooperation of the largest Polish energy companies in this area, said PGE. At this point in time, offshore wind farms in the Polish Baltic Sea zone will have a capacity of 8-11 GW according to state assumptions in PEP2040.

Tauron is interested in significant investment in direct investment related to the construction and operation of offshore wind farms, as well as investments to support the development of offshore wind energy. The agreement to jointly implement the SHPP project with PGE is an important element in building the Tauron Group’s position in the Polish offshore wind market, PGE said. The Tauron Group wants to have offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea with a capacity of 1 GW by 2030.

The Enea Group is one of the largest energy companies in Poland and is jointly responsible for the country’s energy security. It supplies energy to over 2.7 million customers.

“The Enea Group is firmly committed to the energy of the future, including offshore wind farms. Working together and pooling the strengths of the largest Polish energy groups in the development of offshore wind is the right direction. With the signed agreement, we increase our chances of investing in the most efficient renewable energy sources today. The Baltic Sea offers us great opportunities for expanding wind energy. The cooperation enables us to better exploit this potential, which gives Poland the chance to become a leader in the development of offshore projects in the Baltic Sea. “ called PaweÅ‚ Szczeszek, CEO of Enea.
