The boat is in front of the island of the Cycladic island of Milos, announced the Greek coast guard. They added that three of his ships, as well as a private boat, a naval helicopter and an air force helicopter, were helping the rescue operation. The circumstances of the accident were initially unknown and there was no direct information about the type of ship concerned.
Shortly after the ship’s plight was announced, the Greek coast guard announced that all 18 passengers on the ship had been rescued.
They have now been brought ashore.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said “as far as we know” everyone involved is Greek and is in a “healthy” condition.
Earlier, the Coast Guard said the incident sank a 28 to 30 meter long ship about 16 miles northwest of Milos Island, with authorities alerted around 10:30 a.m. local time.
Milos is the most south-westerly island in the Cyclades group and is known for its exotic beaches and colorful landscapes.
Earlier reports said there were 17 passengers on board the boat.
