Three fishermen were rescued Monday after their boat capsized off Tomales Bay, Coast Guard officials reported.

The boat began taking water before capsizing about half a mile offshore, the Coast Guard said in a press release.

At around 9:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol officials alerted the San Francisco Coast Guard that three people were sitting on the hull of the overturned fishing boat, the statement said.

A lifeboat dispatched by the Coast Guard’s Bodega Bay station arrived at 10 a.m. and picked up three uninjured fishermen, the message said.

The lifeboat returned to the station and was met by rescue workers who were treating the three unidentified men for symptoms of hypothermia.

“Fortunately, this case was successful,” Lt. Cmdr. Megan Dennelly, coordinator of the San Francisco Sector Search and Rescue Mission, said in the press release. She said a GPS verification tool called RapidSOS helped get rescuers to the capsized boat quickly.

“This ability accelerated the Coast Guard response and helped save the lives of fishermen,” she said.
