DB Regio orders battery electric multiple units from Stadler

The trains will be used in the German region of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

DB Regio has ordered 14 two-part Flirt Akku BEMU from Stadler, which will enter service in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region from December 2026.

In March 2021, Stadler successfully completed a three-year research project to test the device’s battery operation. The Flirt battery can be operated on partially and non-electrified routes and has a range of up to 100 km in battery operation. The train traveled up to 224 km in battery mode during the test.

DB Regio will operate the trains on the previously diesel-only H network, which runs along part of the Baltic Sea coast. DB Regio was awarded the contract in 2010 to operate the network for 13 years from 2012, covering 1.5 million train kilometers per year and comprising the routes RB11 Wismar – Rostock – Tessin and RB12 Bad Doberan – Rostock – Graal-Müritz.

The Flirt battery multiple units have 99 seats, two multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, prams and bicycles as well as air conditioning, WiFi, sockets, video surveillance and a modern passenger information system.

In addition, DB Regio ordered 44 Flirt Akku BEMU on November 25, 2021, which it will operate in the regions of Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Baden-Württemberg. Since 2019, Stadler has sold 113 vehicles with alternative drive technologies in Germany
