A prominent German MP has died after an emergency landing of her plane at Shannon Airport.

Karin Strenz, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is said to have lost consciousness on a flight from Cuba to Germany.

As a result, the plane had to make an emergency stop in Shannon at around 7.30pm on Sunday.

On landing it was received by airport staff, paramedics and gardaí.

Ms. Strenz, 53, was then admitted to Limerick University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy to determine the exact cause of death is to be carried out.

In a statement, a Garda spokesman said:

“Gardaí and the emergency services have been made aware of a medical emergency on board a flight that took place on 21.

“A woman (50) was taken from the plane to Limerick University Hospital.

“The woman was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy was prepared.”

Allegedly, Mrs. Strenz traveled with her husband from Varadero in Cuba to Frankfurt.

It is not known whether the couple traveled for private or professional reasons.

Ms. Strenz was born in the city of Lübz in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northeast Germany.

In 2009 she was elected to the German Bundestag for the first time.

Before being elected to the Bundestag, she worked in the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for 7 years.
