A trio of dogs from Dogs in Action, accompanied by their handlers, recently visited Margate Retirement Village. The handlers were invited to visit the elderly living in the care facility for the infirm with their dogs as a form of therapy.
Not only did the humans enjoy the experience but the dogs did too, it was all tail wagging and sitting for the canines to pet.
The dogs were very well received by the residents and staff and everyone wanted to see them again.
“It was an honor to bring joy and smiles to everyone who came into contact with the dogs,” said Yvonne Eland of Dogs in Action, who had her just 10-month-old Pomeranian R’Tic in tow.
Special thanks to Yvonne Els and Amy as well as Ellen Nissen and her gentle giant Pablo. Amy and Pablo are rescue dogs.
These dogs are trained and well behaved in dealing with wheelchair users or bedridden patients.
“They are specially selected for this type of interaction with people and have to meet a certain standard,” says Yvonne.
The small group was joined by Derek Pearson (Residents Activities Committee Chair) and Diane Stack (Entertainment Sub Committee Chair).
Future visits include obedience demonstrations and tricks taught to the dogs to keep residents entertained.
