Mumbai’s “Dabbawala” was caught in a loan fraud for promising 61 free dabbawalas scooters

Mumbai, The Mumbai Police has a self-appointed spokesman for Mumbai’s “Dabbawalas” for an alleged one Credit fraud on behalf of 61 dabbawalas by promising to give them free scooters, an official said on Tuesday.

“A team of our officers picked up the defendant, Subhash Talekar, from his village in Pune District and brought him to Mumbai early Tuesday. He will shortly be brought before a local court, “Nitin Alaknure, chief police inspector at Ghatkopar Police Station, told IANS.

Alongside Talekar, another accomplice in the alleged credit fraud, Vitthal Sawant escapes and the police are looking for him.

Alaknure said the fraud – valued at around 7,000,000 yen – had been committed since 2014, and a complaint was filed against Talekar in 2019.

“After that, investigations into the matter were carried out, but there were hurdles during the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown Bombay High Court for an early bail which was refused, prompting us to file the lawsuit, “added Alaknure.

The official body of the Dabbawalas, the chairman of the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charitable Trust (NMTBSCT), Ulhas Muke, welcomed the development and said that the defendant had “ruined the good image” of Dabbawalas with such fraudulent practices.
