State data protection officers check the Luca app

The data protection officer in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to take a closer look at Luca, an app for tracking contacts in the corona pandemic. A spokeswoman said on Thursday that the authority had preliminary documents from the state government since this week, but could not comment yet. The reason for the examination are press inquiries from the authority about the growing criticism from IT circles of Luca’s application.

According to the German news agency, the authority still sees no reason to warn Luka. However, important questions about liability and the protection of technical data are open, said the spokeswoman. The data protection officers in Berlin are responsible for this, because that’s where the company is behind Luca.

According to the spokeswoman, privacy advocates emphasize that no one should be excluded from public life who does not want to use the app. There has to be a non-discriminatory alternative. However, alternatives that are more privacy-friendly, such as the Corona warning app, which will soon be equipped with functions similar to Luca, could run into difficulties.

Because in the Corona state ordinance in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Luca was identified as the central solution for contact tracking. This doesn’t imply any obligation, but the government wants everyone to use as much of Lucca as possible. Ultimately, a spokeswoman for the infrastructure ministry said traders must meet documentation requirements; The government “strongly” recommends the use of Lucca due to its association with health authorities.

A vulnerability was found in the Luca Contact Tracker master keys just this week. The Chaos Computer Club (CCC) demanded an “immediate stop” from Luca after the security hole became known. CCC spokesman Linus Newman criticized the vulnerability as a “fundamental lack of understanding of basic IT security principles”. Because of a “continuous series of security problems”, no more tax money is to be spent on this and the use of the app is to be discontinued. (With materials from dpa) /
