Stormy winds in Poland kill 2, over 350,000 without power

WARSAW, February 19 (UNI/Sputnik) Two people died and more than 350,000 people are suffering from power outages in Poland due to gusty winds, the Polish Government Security Center said on Saturday. “364,366 people were left without electricity. Two people died as a result of the storm,” the statement said. Karol Kierzkowski, spokesman for the Polish State Fire Service, noted that both people died because trees fell on cars. One of the accidents occurred in the Wielkopolskie Voivodeship and the other in the Lubelskie Voivodeship. According to him, emergency services have received 6,378 reports of gusty winds since midnight. Most emergencies occurred in the provinces of West Pomeranian (1629), Wielkopolskie (1379) and Kujawsko-Pomorskie (751). Rescue operations mainly concerned the removal of fallen trees and damage to buildings. The Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management warned that wind speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour were observed across the country on Saturday. Earlier in the day, railway company PKP Intercity warned that stormy winds could disrupt train services, recommended avoiding travel and promised to refund tickets. Western Europe is also facing a storm named Eunice, which hit the French coast on Friday with winds of 176 kilometers per hour. The storm then spread to Germany and the Netherlands, causing accidents on the roads and disrupting train and air traffic. UNI/SPUTNIK MYK
