The BC SPCA confiscated two dozen animals from a breeder in the Kamloops area.

On Tuesday (May 25), the organization announced that it had confiscated 16 immortal Pomeranian and Yorkshire Terrier-Cross puppies, a three-month-old Labrador Retriever and seven chickens due to unsanitary living conditions, overcrowding and poor ventilation.

The BC SPCA said the seizure was due to a complaint made to the SPCA’s animal cruelty hotline. An arrest warrant was then issued on a property near Kamloops. The animals were confiscated late last week.

BC SPCA law enforcement officer Marcie Moriarty said chickens were discovered in Tupperware containers and puppies lived in confined spaces with a strong odor of urine.

“The ammonia smell was unhealthy,” said Moriarty.

Moriarty said that due to the young age of the animals, their physical health was judged to be “not poor” although the animals were in a state of distress when they were confiscated. The animals are currently in the care of the BC SPCA and cannot currently be adopted.

Moriarty said an unnamed woman was convicted of cruelty to animals back in 2005 after an investigation that led to further dog confiscations. Moriarty said she could not reveal the identity of the woman or the location of the farm.

Moriarty said a judge issued a ruling in 2005 that included a ban on keeping animals, but it has now expired.

“This is worrying, of course, because that person should know,” she said.

Moriarty said the woman once again bred puppies and sold them for up to $ 2,000. She said it was “unacceptable” to benefit from the suffering of vulnerable animals.

The BC SPCA will recommend fees.
