Berlin, August 28th (IANS): One month before the general election in Germany, the SPD caught up with the conservative CDU / CSU, according to the political barometer of the public broadcaster ZDF.

The SPD gained three percentage points within two weeks and received 22 percent of the votes in new elections, according to the poll published on Friday by the Elections Research Group among around 1,300 Germans.

With the worst result in the history of the ZDF political barometer, the senior head of the current CDU / CSU government lost four percentage points and fell to 22 percent.

The survey was conducted between August 24th and 26th.

Almost every second German has preferred the SPD candidate Olaf Scholz to succeed Angela Merkel, who is leaving politics after 16 years as Chancellor.

CDU leader Armin Laschet, on the other hand, lost support and only achieved approval of 17 percent.

Although the Green candidate Annalena Baerbock only landed third in the referendum, the Greens won one percentage point and were elected with 20 percent, followed by the AfD with 11 percent and the Liberal Party (FDP) with 10 percent cents.

The Bundestag election will take place on September 26th to elect the members of the 20th Bundestag and Parliament.

State elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania take place on the same day.
