Who are the leaders at the 2021 G7 Cornwall Summit: Profiles

The presidents, prime ministers, commissioners and chancellors attending the G7 summit are some of the most famous faces in world politics.

Delegates from the UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada as well as guests from India, Australia and South Korea have gathered in Carbis Bay to discuss global efforts to recover from Covid-19 and protect against future pandemics, and to discuss ways to combat climate change and preserve the planet’s biodiversity.

But who is who on the summit? Here is everything you need to know about the participating world leaders.

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson is the Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Johnson was elected Prime Minister in the 2019 general election and has been overseeing the UK’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previously, he was MP for Henley from 2001 to 2008 and for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015. Between these positions, he served two terms as Mayor of London between 2008 and 2016 and led the implementation of the bike rental system known as’ Boris Bikes and the London 2012 Olympics.

Joe Biden

Joe Biden is the President of the United States of America. A Democratic Party member was elected president in the 2020 US election, defeating former President Donald Trump. Biden previously served as Senator for Delaware between 1973 and 2009 and Vice President of Barrack Obama between 2009 and 2017.

He had previously run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008 and was re-elected as Senator six times. In the first 100 days of his presidency, Biden signed more executive orders than the vast majority of his predecessors, many of which reversed the previous president’s orders, including re-entry into the Paris Agreement and the World Health Organization.

Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of Canada. He is the second youngest prime minister in Canadian history and has been the Liberal Party leader since 2013. He has been a member of the Canadian Parliament since 2008 and the eldest son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who won four elections between 1968 and 1980. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau oversaw a ban on assault weapons, the signing of the Paris Agreement, the legalization of cannabis and numerous ethical investigations. Trudeau was also a leader during Canada’s failed bid for temporary membership in the United Nations Security Council.

Emmanuel Macron

Emmanuel Macron is the President of France. At 39, he is the youngest president in French history. After serving as Deputy Secretary General under Francois Hollande, he was promoted to the French cabinet as Minister for Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs in August 2014. Macron would then step down from the cabinet in 2016 to start his 2017 presidential campaign.

Macron was a member of the Socialist Party from 2006 to 2009, but fought under the centrist political movement he founded, initially called En Marche and later renamed La République En Marche. As president, Emmanuel Macron saw his approval ratings at only 25% and 60%.

Angela Merkel

Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany. Merkel was the opposition leader in the Bundestag of the CDU from 2002 to 2005, and in 1990 she was elected for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Angela Merkel was elected Chancellor in 2005 and is Germany’s first female Chancellor and has been described by some as the “most powerful woman in the worldâ€.

Merkel is described as a conservatively oriented politician, but has repeatedly driven her party further to the left through political decisions. Merkel announced in 2018 that she would no longer stand for re-election in 2021 and step down from her position instead of running for a fifth term.

Mario Draghi

Mario Draghi is the Prime Minister of Italy. Previously, he was Governor of the Bank of Italy from 2006 to 2011 and President of the European Central Bank from 2011 to 2019. He was elected Prime Minister of Italy in 2021 after being sworn in to form a government of national unity and negotiating with political parties such as the League, the Five Star Movement, the Democratic Party and Forza Italia.

In a 2015 interview, Draghi described himself as similar to a liberal socialist and was described by colleagues as an “American liberal”. His government has been backed by Italian parties from across the political spectrum and is committed to implementing and overseeing an effective Covid-19 economic stimulus for the country.

Yoshihide Suga

Yoshihide Suga is the Prime Minister of Japan. Suga was elected chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party and succeeded former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2020 after Abe’s resignation. Suga was previously Chief Cabinet Secretary of the former Prime Minister from 2012 to 2020 and Minister of Interior and Communications from 2006 to 2007.

After he was elected to the Japanese state parliament in 1996, he previously represented the 2nd district of Kanagawa in the parliamentary elections in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Politically, Yoshihide Suga was described as conservative and declared when he took office that he would continue the “Abenomic†model of Shinzo Abe’s economic policy.

Ursula von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen is President of the European Commission. Before that, she was a member of the German Bundestag for Lower Saxony from 2009 to 2019 and in Angela Merkel’s cabinet from 2013 to 2019, most recently as Minister of Defense. It is also a member of the CDU and its EU equivalent, the European People’s Party.

She was proposed as a candidate for the head of the European Commission in July 2019 and was elected to this post by the European Parliament two weeks later. Von der Leyen’s policies are generally described as right-wing, and she has been speculating for some time both as the successor to Angela Merkel as Federal Chancellor and as a favorite as the next NATO Secretary General.

Scott Morrison (guest)

Scott Morrison is the Prime Minister of Australia. Morrison was elected Prime Minister of Australia in 2018 after he succeeded Malcom Turnball as Chairman of the Liberal Party and led the center-right Liberal-National Coalition to victory in the 2019 general election.

Morrison joined the Australian Parliament in 2007 for Cook, and subsequently became Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Minister for Social Services, Treasurer of Australia and Minister for Public Services. His plane was delayed due to fog and had to divert from Newquay Airport to land in London.

Narendra Modi (guest)

Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India. Modi took office in 2014 after defeating former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as leader of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party. Before becoming Prime Minister of India, Modi was a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and 14th Chief Minister of Gujarat. In 2014 he became a Member of Parliament for Lok Sabha. He will take part virtually in the outreach sessions of the G7 summit.

Moon Jae-In (guest)

Moon Jae-In is the President of South Korea. Moon Jae-In took office in 2017 after being elected as a member of the Democratic Party of Korea. He began his political career between 2007 and 2008 as President Roh Moo-hyun’s chief of staff before joining the National Assembly of Sasang (Busan) in 2012. In 2015 he was elected chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea and elected president in 2017.
