The incident came in the 42nd minute when teammates and referee Anthony Taylor quickly called for help. The Danish team formed a ring around him when the paramedics tried to revive Eriksen.

A while later, Eriksen was sent off with white sheets on either side and UEFA stopped the game. After news leaked that Eriksen was stable in the hospital and had spoken to his teammates, UEFA announced that the game would resume almost 2 hours after the incident, at the request of the players on both sides.

“We contacted him and the players spoke to Christian,” said Peter Möller from the Danish Football Association.

“He’s fine and they’re playing the game for Christian,” said Möller.

Finland eventually beat Denmark 1-0, with Joel Pohjanpalo scoring his country’s first goal in a major tournament. Finland, which has never qualified for a World Cup and also took part in the European Championship finals for the first time.

Denmark then had a chance to equalize when Paulus Arajuri brought down Yussuf Poulsen when the Dane chased a through pass from Thomas Delaney into the box. But the penalty from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg was saved by Lukas Hradecky.

The game was goalless when Eriksen collapsed in Group B just before half-time. The crowd at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen sang the Danish national anthem and shouted “Christian Eriksen” while they waited for news about the player.

Before the worrying collapse of Eriksen, Denmark was dominant. Finland’s goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky saved Jonas Wind’s 20-meter shot and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s header.
