This is the heartwarming moment a black Staffordshire terrier saved her canine friend from drowning in a backyard swimming pool in South Africa.

CCTV footage shows the black pooch running to rescue the smaller toy Pomeranian, which slipped on the edge of the pool and fell into the water on April 8 in Boksburg City.

Sensing that her friend is in danger, seven-year-old Staffie dog named Jessie repeatedly walks around the pool, reaching into the water to try to reach 13-year-old white pooch Chucky, who is struggling to stay afloat.

The outside camera footage showed Chucky strolling safely beside the pool before being distracted by something in the garden and slipping in through the pool steps

Frantically he paddles doggy in the water to stay afloat before Jessie rushes over quickly and tries to help.

The heroic puppy reaches into the water to grab Chucky, but his wet fur keeps slipping out of her mouth and he falls back in.

After several unsuccessful attempts, she uses all her strength after trying for 34 minutes to get the exhausted dog to safety before they hop off together.

Pet owner Byron Thanarayen said he and his wife Melissa were watching the poolside security camera to see what the two dogs might have been doing.

He said, “We were trying to look for clues as to where he might have got his head wet. We thought he might dip his head in the water, but there was no clutter in the house to support this suggestion.

“It was heartbreaking to watch. We’re still struggling to watch this video today just thinking about what could have happened if Jessie hadn’t been there. ‘

Byron added that the heroic pooch was a distressed rescue dog that the couple adopted four years ago.

The couple are their third adoptive family after their previous foster families have brought them back to the shelter.

Mr Thanarayen said the previous owners complained that Jessie was difficult with other animals, but “she got along with our other two dogs from the start”.

He added, “I’m really proud of her considering she is the youngest. Our dogs can swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not with them. “

To prevent similar incidents in the future, the couple are now hiring workers to install a cover for their pool.
