A Staffordshire bull terrier has been euthanized following an investigation by Gibsons Town bylaw enforcement.

Status Officer Sue Booth confirmed with Coastal journalist the dog was returned to the city and euthanized on May 6, in accordance with the city’s dog licensing and regulation.

According to witnesses, the bull terrier attacked and killed a 20 lb. Shih Tzu-poodle mix named Bo as the dogs walked behind Elphinstone High School on the evening of May 2nd.

Coastal journalist asked for more details on the nature of the attack, including whether the dogs involved were off leash, but the city declined to comment, citing privacy concerns.

Sunshine Coast RCMP, who arrived at the scene after the attack, reported the two dogs were walking separately on a field when the bull terrier grabbed the Shih Tzu poodle by the neck and shook it.

On May 4, the bull terrier was declared dangerous by the city and an investigation was underway.

Fatal dog attacks have been relatively rare on the Sunshine Coast. In 2013, a Pomeranian died of his injuries following a dog attack on the off-leash Kinnikinnick trails in Sechelt.
