An American citizen who was killed in an attack by Russian forces while fighting alongside Ukrainian forces has been identified by the American news agency. According to his family, Willy Joseph Cancel, 22, died Monday in the war, family members confirmed to CNN. Cancel is reported as a former US Marine who went to war and was being employed by the private military company at the time of his assassination.
“He wanted to go over because he believed in what Ukraine was fighting for and he wanted to be a part of it, to contain it there so it didn’t come here, and that maybe our American soldiers didn’t have to be a part of it,” Cancels said Mother, family Rebecca, CNN in a telephone interview with the American broadcaster CNN.
The former US Marine flew to Poland on March 12 and had enlisted to fight with soldiers from “all different countries,” his mother said, hinting that he was likely part of the International Legion of Ukraine.
“They didn’t find his body,” she said. “They’re trying, the men that were with him, but it was either grabbing his body or getting killed, but we’d love for him to come back to us.”
