A Mercer man is jailed for a passing gunfight in Waterville that injured a 7-year-old girl while she was sitting in her bedroom.

19-year-old Gavin Loabe pleaded guilty a month ago. Despite his original claim that he only drove the vehicle, police said he was the person who shot at an apartment building in Waterville. Loabe told authorities that he mistakenly thought someone else would live there. He was sentenced to eight years in prison on Wednesday.

Emaleeah Frost was in her bedroom when a bullet came through the wall and hit her. She was hospitalized and reportedly still in pain from her wounds. WABI TV reports Loabe apologized to Emahleeah and her family in court and to his own family, whom he said must be embarrassed about what he did.

Court documents at the time of his arrest showed that Loabe and an accomplice were after a “Mr. Vigue ‘in the apartment building about an alleged proposal to Loabe’s girlfriend. At the time, police said there was no evidence that anyone with that name lived in the apartment building. 20-year-old Jeremiah Gamblin was also arrested in connection with the shooting.
