Coronavirus precautions will lead to a very different kind of Thanksgiving for many people this year, including himself, said Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday.

“It’s unfortunate because that’s such a sacred part of American tradition, the Thanksgiving family reunion, but it’s a risk,” Fauci, the country’s leading infectious disease expert, told CBS Evening News host Norah O’Donnell.

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, said that given the current spread of Covid-19 and the rise in infections, people need to be very careful at social gatherings, especially among the elderly and those with underlying diseases.

“You may have to bite the bullet and sacrifice this social gathering unless you are fairly certain that the people you are dealing with are not infected. Either they were recently tested or they live a lifestyle where they don’t interact with anyone but you and your family, â€he said.

He added that traveling on airplanes and public transport could increase exposure to the virus.

“My Thanksgiving will be very different this year,†noted Fauci.

He said he would like to spend the vacation with his children, but they would have to travel from abroad to get home.

“They made the decision not to come home for Thanksgiving because of their concern for me and my age, even though all three of them would love to come home for Thanksgiving,” said Fauci.
