Sumrall, Mississippi – Services for Ms. Dorris Sue Polk Lewis, 80, of Sumrall, will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hattiesburg Chapel of the Jones and Son Funeral Home with Bro. Everette Broome and Bro. Lavon Haden officiate. He will be buried at a later date in the Biloxi National Cemetery.
Dorris Sue Polk was the youngest of seven siblings. As the youngest she enjoyed visiting her nieces and nephews, whom she often called “Sue Bell”.
At the age of twelve, Sue accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at Oloh Baptist Church. She was a 1960 graduate of Sumrall High School. Soon after graduating, she was employed as a switchboard operator at Bell in Hattiesburg. She later moved to the Gulf Coast.
In October 1976, Sue married Jim Lewis, who was serving in the Navy. After Jim retired as Navy Senior Chief in September 1980, Sue and Jim built a new home in Gulfport.
They were active members of the Bible Baptist Church of Gulfport, where they often made their homes available to missionaries.
Sue retired on December 30, 1991 after thirty years with the Bell Telephone Company.
After her husband’s death, she returned to her old home near Oloh, where she built a new house that often welcomed nieces and nephews. She fondly remembered what she called “her good old days”.
Sue had a loving, passionate way of helping her family and contributing to the Church.
She is greatly missed by her lifelong friends and acquaintances. Sue leaves her very loyal pet Lexie.
Her beloved husband, Jim Lewis, preceded her in death; her parents Clifton and Martha Bell Polk; her brothers WC Polk and James Kenneth Polk; her sisters Kathryn Lewis, Juanita Broome, Judine Davis and Willene Kerley.
She leaves behind her stepdaughter, Karen Lynn Chase of Chickasaw, AL; her stepson, Kenneth Lee Lewis of Mobile, AL; a lot of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The visitation for Mrs. Lewis will take place on Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. also at the Jones and Son Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
