Equinor, bp bids on Scottish offshore wind developments

STAVANGER, Norway / LONDON – Two majors have confirmed their participation in ScotWind, Crown Estate Scotland’s round of tenders for offshore wind leasing.
Equinor will target floating offshore wind opportunities, which make up approximately half of the sites on offer.
The company operates Hywind Scotland near Peterhead, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm, which went into operation in 2019.
According to the company, the turbines consistently offer the highest capacity factor of any British offshore wind farm.
bp and the German wind power developer EnBW have jointly applied for a lease area off the east coast of Scotland that could support projects with 2.9 GW of generation capacity.
Their offer includes the prospect of accelerating Scotland’s energy transition, bp claimed, by potentially attracting multi-billion pounds of investment in the country’s offshore wind projects and by supporting infrastructure, including ports, ports and shipyards.
In addition, the company would make Aberdeen its global offshore wind center of excellence, support its growing offshore wind portfolio worldwide, and invest in local green hydrogen production.
bp and EnBW would also invest in a new Skills Capability Accelerator developed by Xodus, which offers project experience in the workplace and formal learning.
This is a five-year financial commitment that includes creating entry-level positions for the energy transition and retraining hundreds of oil and gas workers, graduates, and technicians with renewable energy skills. In order to integrate the local supply chain, the partners have opened an online portal through which the Scottish mechanical engineering and supply sectors can participate in the developments.
At the beginning of the year, bp and EnBW agreed to jointly develop and operate two leases in the Irish Sea, which together offer a potential generation capacity of 3 GW.
EnBW currently operates four offshore wind sites in the German Baltic and North Sea and plans to build the 900 MW He Dreiht offshore wind farm, which is scheduled to go into operation in 2025.
