Local media announced on Wednesday evening that a firefighter drowned while working in Altona (North Rhine-Westphalia). The east was not spared either: a man is missing in Saxony.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous region in Germany, torrential rain has caused severe damage, especially in many nursing homes.
In several places the water rose almost three feet into the alleys. According to the fire department, many cellars were flooded.
Trees were uprooted by strong storms.
In Hagen, brooks ran out of their beds and, according to the emergency services, moved “debris” that blocked the streets.
Firefighters used boats near Düsseldorf to rescue three motorists who had got stuck in a flooded motorway tunnel.
Neighboring areas in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Front (northeast) were made aware of thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are also expected in other northern states.
On Tuesday, Bavaria was so badly affected in the south of the country that a natural disaster was declared in the Hof region due to flooded roads.
The new unrest to be expected in the coming days has caused the municipalities to fear the flooding of the Rhine and Moselle, the levels of which have already risen after heavy rains in recent days.
