Russia warns and restricts flight zone over the Black Sea – Russian Politics & Diplomacy

MOSCOW, April 20. / TASS /. Russia has declared a flight hazard zone for civil flights in the area over the Black Sea and the Crimea, inform the NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) of Russia.

Russia has issued a total of three NOTAMs. They will be active until April 24th, with slight differences. A number of flight routes in the Simferopol flight information region over the Black Sea will be completely closed. The flight zone over the Crimean peninsula remains open.

According to the NOTAMs, in some areas flight routes are only suspended at altitudes above 11,900 meters (higher than civil flights rise), while some zones have restrictions on flights above 6,100 meters. In some areas, the shutdown takes place at sea level.

On Tuesday, the press service of the Black Sea Fleet announced that as part of the control inspection of the fleet forces for the winter training period, exercises with over 20 ships and boats of the Black Sea Fleet and three combat aircraft squadrons of the Southern Military Air Force and Air Defense Forces of the district were detained.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had previously issued a NOTAM in which it recommended that American airlines operate flights over some areas of Russia and Ukraine, namely the flight information regions of Kiev, Dnipro and Simferopol and the regions of Moscow and Rostov on Don flight information regions that are within 100 nautical miles with “extreme caution”.
