Arsenal give Pablo Mari a permanent transfer

According to the Brazilian sports news website Coluna do Fla and apparently confirmed by Flamengos VP in a video conference, arsenal exercised (or advised Flamengo that it will exercise) their option to purchase Pablo Mari, which was included in the loan deal earlier this season.

David Ornstein Reported back at the end of April the per Mikel ArtetaWith a desire for a left-footed center-back, Arsenal would likely make the loan move a permanent deal for about £ 10m more in fees. The loan agreement cost the Gunners £ 4.5 million upfront. The details of the move from loan to duration are not confirmed, however Reports now have just under £ 3m more plus just under £ 1m for every 10 appearances Mari makes for Arsenal up to 80.

It’s difficult to judge the move because we’ve seen so little of Mari. He managed just 204 first-team minutes in three games before sustaining an ankle injury at the end of the season Manchester city in Arsenal’s first second leg. Obviously, Mikel Arteta and the club have seen enough of him in training and his limited time to feel comfortable making the move permanent.

It’s also difficult to rate the transfer as we have no idea how the fees range from 10 to 15 million. We don’t know how much money the club will have to spend in the coming window, who may be available, or whether clubs will take action.

In a vacuum, the deal is fine. He seems good enough, and he fulfills a specific need for Mikel Arteta’s system. The fee structure due to the appearance makes sense, especially when you consider the unknown severity of your injury. His current contract expires at the end of December 2022, which means he is unlikely to make 80 appearances for the club without an extension.

Mari may not be a long-term solution for the center-back, but that’s fine. Arsenal need stopgaps now. David Luiz could be out of contract in two weeks. Sokratis is out of contract at the end of next season. Both are on the wrong side of 30. Shkodran Mustafi is always shopping. Rob Holding and Calum chambers are still young (ish) but have been slowed down by injuries and haven’t exactly set the world on fire with the chances they got. William Saliba is an exciting young player but has not played a minute in the Premier League.

Turning Pablo Mari’s loan deal into a permanent deal is a bit of a fun, low-risk move that could be exactly the kind of transfer Arsenal need right now.
